Celebrate Children's Day at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden May
10, 2008 (12 - 4 pm) in conjunction with Historic Lethbridge
Week
Kodomo no Hi (Children's Day)
is a Japanese national holiday which takes place annually on
May 5 as part of Golden Week. It is a day set aside to
respect children's personalities and to celebrate their
happiness. In this spirit, and with the generous support of
our volunteers and in conjunction with Lethbridge Heritage
Week, we are delighted to offer the following program:
Nikkei Society Taiko Drummers
12 - 12:10 pm
Buddhist
Choir 1 - 1:15 pm
Taka Karate
demonstration 1:30 - 1:50 pm
Japanese
Tea Ceremony Rie & Jack Nagai 2 - 3 pm
Momiji
Dancers performance 3 - 3:15 pm followed by folk dance
lessons
Nikkei
Society Taiko Drummers 4 - 4:10 pm near Visitors Centre
Other
activities include a reading of children's stories at the
azumaya, chopstick lessons and the opportunity for families
to raise koi nobori (windsocks) in honor of children and in
the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong. Nikka
Yuko will break with tradition and have koi nobori on short
poles to be "planted" behind the pavilion to make the event
a little more interesting for younger visitors. (Koi Noburi
are traditionally flown above the roofs of houses with sons,
with the largest koi nobori for the father decreasing in
size with one for each son.) A very large koi nobori will be
flown outside the Garden gates with a smaller koi nobori
flying inside the walls.
